C1.B.AO6AO6 — Apply accurate spelling, punctuation and a wide range of vocabulary and sentence structures

Notes

AO6 in Component 1 Section B (Creative Writing)

AO6 is worth 16 of the 40 marks for the creative writing task in Component 1 — that is 40 percent of the total. It rewards technical accuracy and ambition, separately from AO5 which marks craft and content.

What AO6 specifically rewards

  • Spelling accuracy, including ambitious vocabulary.
  • Punctuation accuracy across the full range — full stops, commas, semicolons, colons, dashes, brackets, ellipses, speech punctuation.
  • Sentence-structure variety — simple, compound, complex, minor, periodic.
  • Range of vocabulary, including precise verbs, abstract nouns and figurative language.

How AO6 is banded (Component 1 Section B, 16 marks)

  • 13–16 (high): writing is ambitious; vocabulary varied and well chosen; sentence structures varied for effect; almost no errors.
  • 9–12 (clear): mostly accurate; some range of structures; minor errors that do not impede meaning.
  • 5–8 (some): errors begin to obscure meaning at times; sentences mostly simple/compound.
  • 1–4 (limited): frequent errors throughout; very limited range.

Practical tactics

  1. Vary opening word: do not start every sentence with a noun or pronoun. Begin with subordinate clauses, adverbs, "-ing" participles.
  2. Use a deliberate one-word minor sentence at a high-stakes moment. Silence. Darkness. Then…
  3. Master the semicolon. Two related independent clauses, no conjunction.
  4. Embed colons for emphasis: introduce a key noun or list.
  5. Use dashes — sparingly — for parenthetical interruption.
  6. Vary sentence length: a 30-word periodic sentence followed by a four-word fragment changes the rhythm.

What loses AO6 marks fast

  • Comma splices (joining two independent clauses with a comma).
  • "Their / there / they're", "your / you're", "lose / loose" mix-ups.
  • Missing apostrophes.
  • Missing speech punctuation.
  • Run-on sentences.

The proofread minute

Always reserve 60 seconds at the end to fix capital letters, missed full stops and apostrophes — these are quick low-effort gains in the AO6 band.
