Notes

Negation — la négation

French negation comes in two parts: ne + a second word. The two parts wrap around the conjugated verb.

Common negations

FrenchEnglishNotes
ne … pasnotmost common
ne … jamaisnever
ne … plusno more / no longer
ne … riennothingrien can also be subject
ne … personnenobodypersonne can also be subject
ne … aucun(e)not any / noadjective; agrees
ne … nulle partnowhere
ne … ni … nineither … nor
ne … queonlyrestriction, not negation

Examples:

  • Je ne fume pas. — I don't smoke.
  • Elle ne mange jamais de viande. — She never eats meat.
— There's nobody in the room.
  • Je n'ai aucune idée. — I have no idea.
  • Il ne reste plus de pain. — There's no more bread.

Negation in the perfect tense

The two parts wrap the auxiliary, NOT the past participle:

  • Je n'ai pas mangé. — I didn't eat.
  • Elle n'est jamais venue. — She has never come.

Exception: personne, nulle part, aucun, ni…ni go after the participle:

  • Je n'ai vu personne. — I saw nobody.

Subject pronouns of negation

Personne and rien can be the subject:

  • Personne n'est venu. — Nobody came.
  • Rien n'est arrivé. — Nothing happened.

de after a negative

Indefinite and partitive articles become de after most negatives:

  • J'ai un chienJe n'ai pas de chien.
  • Elle mange du painElle ne mange jamais de pain.

(Exception: ne … que keeps the original article, because it's a restriction — see next section.)

ne … que — "only" (not a true negative)

Means "only / nothing but". Doesn't follow the de rule:

  • Je ne mange que des fruits le matin. — I only eat fruit in the morning.
  • Il n'y a qu'une solution. — There's only one solution.

Spoken French — dropping ne

In speech and casual writing, the ne is often dropped: Je sais pas, j'ai jamais vu ça. But don't drop it in your written exam — examiners mark it strictly.

Combining negatives

You can stack two negatives, but only certain pairs:

  • Je n'ai jamais rien dit. — I never said anything.
  • Personne ne fait jamais de bruit ici. — Nobody ever makes any noise here.

Model phrases

— I don't agree with this statement at all.
  • Je n'ai aucune intention de partir. — I have no intention of leaving.
  • Il ne reste plus que dix minutes. — Only ten minutes left.
  • Personne ne peut nier l'urgence climatique. — Nobody can deny the climate emergency.
  • Je n'aime ni le café ni le thé. — I like neither coffee nor tea.

Common mistakes

  1. Forgetting ne: Je sais pas fine in speech, wrong in exam writing.
  2. Putting pas in the wrong place in PC: Je ai mangé pas is wrong; Je n'ai pas mangé.
  3. Saying ne pas du — should be ne pas de: Je n'ai pas de pain.
  4. Using ne … que as a real negative — it's "only". Articles don't become de.
  5. Forgetting double negatives are allowed: Je n'ai jamais rien fait is correct.
