Asking questions — interroger
French has three ways to form a question. They all mean the same thing — choose by register and topic.
1. Intonation — most casual
Just raise your voice at the end of a statement:
- Tu viens ? — Are you coming?
- Vous parlez français ? — Do you speak French?
2. Est-ce que — neutral, very common in writing
Add est-ce que at the start of the statement:
- Est-ce que tu viens ?
- Est-ce que vous parlez français ?
If a question word is needed, place it before est-ce que:
- Quand est-ce que tu viens ?
- Pourquoi est-ce que tu pleures ?
3. Inversion — formal
Swap subject pronoun and verb (with a hyphen):
- Viens-tu ?
- Parlez-vous français ?
If the verb ends in a vowel and the pronoun begins with one (3rd person), insert -t-:
- Va-t-il ? — Is he going?
- Aime-t-elle le café ?
If the subject is a noun, the noun stays first; add a corresponding pronoun for the inversion:
- Marie aime-t-elle le café ?

- Subject of the verb ("What is happening?"): qu'est-ce qui + verb. Qu'est-ce qui se passe ?

- After a preposition: quoi. À quoi penses-tu ? De quoi parlez-vous ?
Model phrases
- Comment ça va ? — How are you?
- Qu'est-ce que tu fais ce soir ? — What are you doing tonight?
- À quelle heure commence le film ? — What time does the film start?
- Combien de fois par semaine fais-tu du sport ? — How many times a week do you play sport?
- Pourquoi est-ce qu'on ne peut pas y aller ? — Why can't we go?
⚠Common mistakes
- Translating "what" as que in every position — preposition triggers quoi: À quoi penses-tu ?
- Forgetting -t- in inversion: va-il → wrong; va-t-il.
- Quel is an adjective, not a pronoun — it must accompany a noun.
- Using "quoi ?" alone is fine but informal — in writing, prefer que + inversion or qu'est-ce que.
- Mixing comment (how) with comme (as / like). Comment tu fais ça ? (how) vs Tu es comme ton père. (like).
