G.NNouns — gender (masculine/feminine), singular and plural, articles (el/la/los/las, un/una/unos/unas, lo)

Notes

Nouns, gender and articles — los sustantivos y los artículos

Spanish nouns have grammatical gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). Every article, adjective and pronoun must agree. Getting gender right is one of the highest-impact accuracy skills at GCSE.

Definite articles

SingularPlural
Masculineellos
Femininelalas
Neuter (abstract)lo

Exception: feminine nouns beginning with stressed a- or ha- take el in the singular to avoid two vowels: el agua (but las aguas), el hambre, el hacha. The noun is still feminine: el agua fría.

Indefinite articles

SingularPlural
Masculineununos
Feminineunaunas

When to omit: after ser when describing profession/nationality without modification: Es médico, Soy inglés. Also omit before cien, mil and after sin, con.

Gender clues — masculine endings

Typically masculine: -o (libro), -or (color), -aje (viaje), -ón (avión — with accent), -ma (Greek-origin words: el problema, el tema, el sistema, el programa).

Gender clues — feminine endings

Typically feminine: -a (casa), -ión (nación, televisión), -dad/-tad (ciudad, libertad), -ez (vejez), -umbre (costumbre), -itis (bronquitis).

Irregular/tricky genders (learn these)

  • el mapa (map) — masculine despite -a
  • el día (day) — masculine despite -a
  • la mano (hand) — feminine despite -o
  • el problema, el tema, el sistema — Greek -ma words: masculine
  • la foto (photograph) — feminine (short for fotografía)
  • la moto (motorbike) — feminine (short for motocicleta)

Plural formation

  1. Nouns ending in a vowel: add -s (libro → libros, casa → casas)
  2. Nouns ending in a consonant: add -es (ciudad → ciudades, color → colores)
  3. Nouns ending in -z: change to -c + -es (pez → peces, vez → veces)
  4. Words ending in an accented vowel: add -es (bambú → bambúes) — exceptions: sofás, papás
  5. Accent shifts in plural: el examen → los exámenes, el joven → los jóvenes, la nación → las naciones (accent drops because stress stays correct)

Model phrases

  • El agua está muy fría. — The water is very cold. (el + feminine noun + feminine adjective)
  • Tengo un problema con el sistema informático. — I have a problem with the computer system. (both -ma words masculine)
  • Las ciudades españolas son muy animadas. — Spanish cities are very lively.
  • Es profesora de matemáticas. — She is a maths teacher. (no article after ser + unmodified profession)

Common mistakes

  1. la problema — it's el problema (Greek -ma pattern).
  2. el mano — it's la mano (irregular feminine).
  3. Adding an article before a profession: Es una médica is wrong unless modified: Es una médica muy buena (then article is needed).
  4. Forgetting accent loss in plural: el examen → los exámenes (accent retained to show stress hasn't moved).
  5. el foto / el moto — both are feminine: la foto, la moto.
