Prepositions — las preposiciones

Prepositions are small words with big consequences. Getting por vs para right is one of the most tested distinctions in Spanish.

Core prepositions

Por vs para — the key distinction

PARA — purpose, destination, deadline, recipient, opinion:

• Purpose (in order to): Estudio para aprender. — I study in order to learn.
• Destination: El tren para Sevilla. — The train to Seville.
• Deadline: Para mañana. — By tomorrow.
• Recipient: Este regalo es para ti. — This gift is for you.
• Opinion: Para mí, es injusto. — In my opinion, it is unfair.
• Comparison/unexpected: Habla muy bien para ser principiante. — She speaks very well for a beginner.

POR — cause, exchange, duration, movement through, on behalf of, per:

• Cause/reason (because of): Lo hice por amor. — I did it out of love.
• Exchange: Te lo cambio por este. — I'll swap it for this one.
• Duration: Estudié por tres horas. — I studied for three hours.
• Movement through: Paseamos por el parque. — We walked through the park.
• On behalf of: Habló por todos. — He spoke on behalf of everyone.
• Per: Cien euros por persona. — One hundred euros per person.
• Agent in passive: Escrito por Lorca. — Written by Lorca.

The personal "a"

Direct objects that are specific people or personified things take a before them: Veo a mi hermana. — I see my sister. ¿Conoces a Juan? — Do you know Juan? Busco a un médico específico. — I'm looking for a specific doctor.

But: Busco un médico (any doctor — no personal a for non-specific). And: Llamo a mi perro Fido. (personified pet → personal a).

Hace + time (duration)

Llevo + time + gerund or hace + time + que + present/present for ongoing actions: Llevo tres años estudiando español. (I have been studying Spanish for three years.) Hace tres años que estudio español. (same meaning)

For completed actions in the past: hace + time + preterite: Llegué hace dos horas. — I arrived two hours ago.

Model phrases

• Salgo para el aeropuerto a las seis. — I leave for the airport at six.
• Lo compré por veinte euros. — I bought it for twenty euros.
• Desde hace un año vivo en España. — I have been living in Spain for a year.
• Está entre el banco y la farmacia. — It is between the bank and the pharmacy.
• Sin embargo, no todo el mundo está de acuerdo. — Nevertheless, not everyone agrees.
