G.V.IMPImperfect tense (el pretérito imperfecto) — formation, contrast with the preterite; describing past states, habits and ongoing actions

Notes

Imperfect tense — el pretérito imperfecto

The imperfect is the other key past tense. While the preterite narrates completed events, the imperfect describes the background, habitual past actions and ongoing states.

Regular imperfect endings

pronoun-AR (hablar)-ER/-IR (comer/vivir)
yohablabacomía
hablabascomías
él/ellahablabacomía
nosotroshablábamoscomíamos
vosotroshablabaiscomíais
elloshablabancomían

Only three irregular verbs in the imperfect:

  • ser: era, eras, era, éramos, erais, eran
  • ir: iba, ibas, iba, íbamos, ibais, iban
  • ver: veía, veías, veía, veíamos, veíais, veían

Uses of the imperfect

  1. Habitual past actions (used to / would): De niño, jugaba al fútbol todos los días. (As a child, I used to play football every day.)
  2. Ongoing background descriptions: Hacía sol y la gente paseaba por el parque.
  3. Interrupted actions (with preterite): Estaba estudiando cuando sonó el móvil.
  4. Age/time in the past: Tenía diez años cuando empecé a aprender español.
  5. Descriptions of people/places/weather in the past: El hotel era bonito y estaba muy bien situado.

Imperfect vs preterite — the key contrast

PreteriteImperfect
Completed actionOngoing / habitual
Specific time/momentNo specific endpoint
Narrative eventBackground description
Ayer fui al parqueDe niño iba al parque
De repente llovióLlovía cuando salí

Signal words for imperfect: de niño/joven, antes, siempre, normalmente, todos los días/años, cuando era pequeño, a menudo, cada + time unit.

Imperfect continuous

estar (imperfect) + gerund — more vivid way of describing ongoing past action: Estaba comiendo cuando llegó. — I was eating when she arrived.

Model phrases

  • Cuando era pequeño, vivía en el campo y tenía muchos amigos. — When I was young, I lived in the countryside and had many friends.
  • Antes fumaba, pero lo dejé hace dos años. — I used to smoke, but I gave it up two years ago.
  • El museo era impresionante: había cuadros de Velázquez y Goya. — The museum was impressive: there were paintings by Velázquez and Goya.
  • Estábamos esperando el autobús cuando empezó a llover. — We were waiting for the bus when it started to rain.

Common mistakes

  1. Using preterite for habitual past: De niño, fui al cine cada semanaiba (habitual).
  2. Forgetting the written accent in nosotros: hablabamoshablábamos.
  3. Using imperfect for a sudden completed event: De repente llovíallovió (sudden = preterite).
  4. Applying stem changes in the imperfect — there are none: quería not quiería.
  5. Forgetting that ver is irregular: veía not vía.
