G.V.FUTNear future (ir a + infinitive) and simple future; conditional (me gustaría, podríamos, debería)

Notes

Future and conditional — el futuro y el condicional

Three constructions cover the future in Spanish: near future (ir a + inf.), simple future, and conditional. All are essential for expressing plans, predictions and wishes.

Near future: ir a + infinitive

ir (present) + a + infinitive — used for immediate or planned future:

Voy a estudiar medicina. — I'm going to study medicine. Van a llegar tarde. — They're going to arrive late.

Simple future — formation

Infinitive (or irregular stem) + endings: -é, -ás, -á, -emos, -éis, -án

pronounestudiarvivir
yoestudiaréviviré
estudiarásvivirás
él/ellaestudiarávivirá
nosotrosestudiaremosviviremos
vosotrosestudiaréisviviréis
ellosestudiaránvivirán

Irregular stems (same as conditional):

infinitivestemyo form
tenertendr-tendré
poderpodr-podré
hacerhar-haré
quererquerr-querré
sabersabr-sabré
ponerpondr-pondré
venirvendr-vendré
salirsaldr-saldré
decirdir-diré

Uses of the simple future

  1. Predictions: Mañana lloverá en el norte.
  2. Plans (more formal/certain than ir a): El año que viene estudiaré en España.
  3. Probability/conjecture (present): Serán las tres. (It must be about 3 o'clock.)
  4. Promises: Te llamaré esta noche.

Conditional — formation

Infinitive (or same irregular stems) + endings: -ía, -ías, -ía, -íamos, -íais, -ían

hablaría, comerías, viviría, hablaríamos, hablaríais, hablarían

Irregular conditional stems: same as future (tendr-, podr-, har-, querr-, sabr-, pondr-, vendr-, saldr-, dir-)

Uses of the conditional

  1. Hypothetical situations (polite wishes): Me gustaría visitar Argentina.
  2. In conditional sentences (if…then): Si tuviera dinero, viajaría por el mundo.
  3. Reported speech (what someone said would happen): Dijo que vendría.
  4. Polite requests: ¿Podría hablar con el director?

Model phrases

  • El año que viene voy a ir a la universidad. — Next year I am going to go to university.
  • Creo que habrá más igualdad en el futuro. — I think there will be more equality in the future.
  • Si pudiera elegir, viviría en España. — If I could choose, I would live in Spain.
  • Me gustaría ser intérprete porque me encanta viajar. — I would like to be an interpreter because I love travelling.
  • ¿Podría repetir eso, por favor? — Could you repeat that, please?

Common mistakes

  1. Confusing future and conditional endings: -é/-ás/-á (future) vs -ía/-ías/-ía (conditional).
  2. Using present instead of future: Mañana voy al médico is acceptable (near future), but essays should use future for predictions.
  3. Forgetting the accent on all conditional endings: hablaría not hablaria.
  4. Using ir a + infinitive in hypothetical if-clauses instead of imperfect subjunctive: Si voy a tener tiempoSi tuviera tiempo.
  5. sería not seraría — ser conditional is regular on the irregular stem: ser → ser → sería.
