Notes

Other moods and tenses — Higher Tier focus

These structures appear in Higher-tier reading and writing. Recognising and using them correctly is what distinguishes a grade 7+ from a grade 5.

Present subjunctive — formation

-AR verbs use -E endings; -ER/-IR verbs use -A endings (swap the vowel):

pronounhablarcomervivir
yohablecomaviva
hablescomasvivas
él/ellahablecomaviva
nosotroshablemoscomamosvivamos
vosotroshabléiscomáisviváis
elloshablencomanvivan

Key irregulars: ser → sea, estar → esté, ir → vaya, tener → tenga, hacer → haga, saber → sepa, dar → dé

When to use the subjunctive

W.E.I.R.D.O. triggers:

  • Wishes/wants: Quiero que vengas.
  • Emotion: Estoy contento de que hayas aprobado.
  • Impersonal expressions: Es importante que recicles.
  • Recommendations/requests: Te recomiendo que estudies más.
  • Doubt/denial: No creo que sea verdad.
  • Ojalá: ¡Ojalá haga buen tiempo!

Also after:

  • para que (so that): Te lo explico para que lo entiendas.
  • antes de que (before): Llámame antes de que llegues.
  • aunque (even if — hypothetical): Aunque llueva, iré.
  • cuando (when — future): Cuando llegues, llámame.

Pluperfect — el pretérito pluscuamperfecto

haber (imperfect) + past participle: había comido, habías visto, habían llegado

Uses: action completed before another past action: Cuando llegué, ya había comido. — When I arrived, he had already eaten. No había estado nunca en España. — I had never been to Spain.

Passive voice — la voz pasiva

ser + past participle (agrees in gender/number) + por + agent:

La novela fue escrita por Cervantes. — The novel was written by Cervantes. Los edificios fueron construidos en el siglo XIX. — The buildings were built in the 19th century.

Reflexive passive (se + verb) — more common in Spanish: Se habla español en muchos países. — Spanish is spoken in many countries. Se venden pisos aquí. — Flats are sold here.

Model phrases

  • Es fundamental que los jóvenes aprendan a respetar el medio ambiente. — It is fundamental that young people learn to respect the environment.

  • Se dice que la dieta mediterránea es la más sana del mundo. — It is said that the Mediterranean diet is the healthiest in the world.

Common mistakes

  1. Using indicative after triggers: Es importante que reciclasrecicles (subjunctive).
  2. Forgetting that cuando + future idea requires subjunctive: Cuando llegues not Cuando llegarás.
  3. Confusing past participle for passive vs perfect: fue escrita (passive, agrees) vs ha escrito (active perfect, no agreement).
  4. Using ser for reflexive passive: Se habla español (correct) — don't add "por" unless there is an agent.
  5. Pluperfect: había not habría — that would be conditional perfect.
